New York, (Isbahaysi) – In his inaugural address since his recent appointment, the United Nation’s Acting Ambassador to Somalia, James Swan, provided a comprehensive report on the political landscape of Somalia to the UN Security Council.
Ambassador Swan highlighted the contentious nature of the recent amendments to the provisional constitution, underscoring the exclusion of the Puntland State Government from the process and the rejection by opposition politicians.
“Between February and May, the Federal Parliament approved amendments to the first four chapters of the 2012 Provisional Constitution. These amendments address various issues, including the structure of governance and the country’s electoral system. Some opposition politicians and officials from Puntland have opposed both the process of amending the constitution and the outcomes,” said Swan.
The ambassador further noted a significant development: the Puntland State Government’s decision to withdraw from the federal system until a comprehensive agreement on the constitution is achieved. He emphasized the critical need for a consensus among all stakeholders to ensure successful state-building efforts in Somalia.
In his concluding remarks, Ambassador Swan urged all Somali political factions to collaborate in resolving their disputes and reaching a mutual understanding on the current issues. He stressed the importance of unity and cooperation in moving the country forward.
