Ceerigaabo on the Brink of Direct Armed Conflict

CEERIGAABO (ISBAHAYSI) – The situation in Ceerigaabo is rapidly deteriorating, with reports obtained by Isbahaysi indicating that the Somaliland administration has instructed its forces in the Sanaag region to launch attacks on specific neighborhoods within the city.

These neighborhoods, predominantly inhabited by residents from SSC-Khaatumo regions, have recently witnessed severe incidents, including property looting, arbitrary arrests, and targeted killings. As evidenced by videos circulating on social media, Somaliland military forces are being held responsible for these acts. In response, armed civilians and SSC-Khaatumo forces have mobilized and entered the city.

The city itself is largely deserted, with the majority of residents having fled. Somaliland forces are stationed at key checkpoints and surrounding areas, claiming to be defending Ceerigaabo.

On the other side, SSC-Khaatumo forces, along with reinforcements from eastern Sanaag, are advancing toward Ceerigaabo’s outskirts. Representatives from these forces have stated that their movement is a response to the mistreatment inflicted upon their communities under Somaliland’s administration.

Ceerigaabo has long been affected by tensions stemming from the conflict in the Sool region between Somaliland forces and local communities. The city has endured repeated civilian casualties, allegedly caused by both clan militias and Somaliland forces.

Although recent months had shown signs of peace, following meetings among local traditional elders, the current situation points to an escalating crisis, with the city appearing to edge closer to full-scale armed conflict.

As of now, there are no visible efforts toward peace or reconciliation to avert the looming violence in Ceerigaabo. Neither the Federal Government of Somalia nor representatives of the international community have addressed this emerging crisis.
