Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ahmed Ali Fiqi, has, for the first time, openly intervened in the case of the late Luul Abdiaziz Mohamed, who was burned to death in Mogadishu.

The Minister, who is among government officials striving to overturn the death penalty ruling by Banadir Regional Court and the Court of Appeal against Sayid Ali, ordered the Somali Consulate in Jeddah to draft a letter on behalf of the grandfather of the children left behind by Luul.

The letter obtained by Isbahaysi states that the grandfather, Mohamed Abdullahi Warsame, who fathered the father of Luul’s children, decided to accept compensation for the six children left behind by the deceased. The children appeared in the court hearings multiple times.

It is unclear what impact this letter will have on the case against Sayid Ali, who has been sentenced to death by two courts. However, the blatant interference by members of the government raises concerns over the justice process for Luul’s family, who insist on retribution for the man who burned their daughter alive.
