Mogadishu, (Isbahaysi) – In a decisive move, the Council of Ministers of the Federal Government of Somalia has officially designated the secessionist aspirations of Somaliland as a national threat. This resolution, approved during their regular Thursday meeting, highlights the risks posed to Somalia’s sovereignty, governance, unity, and social cohesion.
For the first time, the Somali government has formally identified Somaliland’s secessionist ambitions as a primary national security threat, second only to terrorism. This new classification empowers national security agencies to take decisive action against individuals or groups advocating or supporting secessionist activities.
The resolution also addresses other critical threats, including terrorism, weak governance, unprotected borders, foreign interference, climate change, technological risks, and social instability.
This significant policy shift has been met with widespread approval among the Somali public, who are now keenly observing how the government will enforce these measures. The Somaliland administration, which staunchly supports secession, has frequently defended its position in national forums, setting the stage for potential future conflicts.
On the other hand, this resolution comes at a time when it is being reported that the President of the Somaliland Administration, Mr. Muse Bihi, will soon be traveling to Addis Ababa to implement the illegal MoU between Ethiopia and Somaliland.
