Mogadishu, Somalia – Professor Mohamed Osman Jawari, a veteran Somali politician and academician who served twice as the Speaker of Somalia’s Parliament, has passed away in Mogadishu at the age of 79, his family and friends confirmed.
Jawari, a key figure in Somali politics, was known for his significant contributions to parliamentary reforms and efforts to stabilize the country’s political institutions. His leadership in Parliament was marked by a commitment to dialogue and legislative progress during some of Somalia’s most challenging times.
Born on December 7, 1945 in Afgoye, Jawari began his career in academia before moving into politics, where he became respected for his expertise in Somali law and governance. He held a PhD in Law from the University of Oslo and served as a professor at various universities including the Somali National University. His tenure as Speaker saw him navigate complex political landscapes, fostering cooperation among diverse political factions.
The news of his passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from across Somalia and the international community. Colleagues and political leaders have praised Jawari’s dedication to his country, his integrity, and his role in shaping Somalia’s political framework.
